Listening From the Heart
Communication is key. We’ve heard this expression a million times. But what does it really mean? We often use the expression when referring to communication with others. But what about the internal conversation we have with ourselves? How often are we sidetracked from our goals by the negative voices in our own head? By listening to our heart, our gut or what I like to call our “internal GPS system”, we can have more effective relationships, better health and achieve our dreams. Communication is key and it starts with me!
When we listen to the voices in our head, we tend to be active listeners. We are our own worst critics and we love to beat ourselves up. It’s easy for us to tune-in to the negative self-talk because of our deep-rooted programming from when we were kids. Thoughts like “we can’t afford it,” “you’re fat (or ugly)” and “you can’t do it” run like a tape in the background of our minds every day. These voices are engrained in our psyche as a protective mechanism – to keep us safe from harm, failure, embarrassment or judgment.
But what if there is nothing to keep you safe from? What if you want to buy a new car or pursue a new career? Or summon up the courage to ask someone for a date? What if you simply want to just sit down and write a book? What can you do to change those internal messages?
First, you want to become aware of the self-talk and identify whose voice is really speaking to you. Is it your inner child? Is it one of your parents? Or, is it a teacher from grade school? Knowing the source of the message can help put your thoughts into perspective.
Next, acknowledge those voices and thank them for serving you in the past. Reassure them that you will be safe in your next endeavor and ask that they support you. By embracing those voices, you will begin to accept and love yourself more completely.
Finally, take the 12” road from your head down to your heart. Be still. Close your eyes. Breathe.
And just listen.
